The new Canon EOS-450D/XSi

Canon EOS-450D/XSi

Just in case you haven’t heard about it, Canon has released their latest consumer digital SLR, the Canon EOS-450D/XSi.

Not simply an updated 400D, this model is a completely new creation that looks far more professional than previous entry–level Canon SLRs. Listed in it’s special site as highlighted features are:

  • 12.2–megapixel CMOS Sensor and DIGIC III
  • Image Stabilizer (IS) Lens Support
  • EOS Integrated Cleaning System
  • Continuous 3.5fps Shooting
  • Live View Shooting
  • Precise 9–point Auto Focus
  • Auto Lighting Optimizer
  • 3.0–inch LCD Monitor
  • Lightweight Body, SD Card Compatibility
  • Viewfinder with 0.87x Magnification
  • Comfortable, Easy Operation
  • Comprehensive System Enhancements

With all the other announcements in the entry–level SLR market, Canon is pressed to deliver a better camera that can compare well against other offerings, especially those from Nikon like the  D40 and the D40x which has handily captured a significant slice of the pie. The way it looks, the 450D appears to be a good contender, but is it going to be enough to reclaim their share of the market?

What do you mean by “looks far more professional than previous entry–level Canon SLRs”? What does a camera need to have to be “professional”?

Its a development from the EOS 400D, no more. Its a few gramms lighter and a few mm smaller. As with so much contemporary electronic gadgetry one will have to ask “will it in my hands create better pictures?”.

If you go to a Canon national site and do the comparison with its predecessor you’ll note compact flash cards are out in favour of SD, not a step forward in my humble opinion.

Keep both feet planted, Canon et al want you to feel you are the owner of rapidly aging kit and that without the new kit you are square.

@remzamora: The design has several styling hints comparable to higher–market models like the 5D and the 40D, though most likely be simply that way — hints. Essentially, it is still an entry–level camera with a few marketing tricks thrown in along with the expected trickle down of new technologies.

@marc: I do agree with your comment to a certain degree. Obviously, any company releasing an updated product wants consumers to buy, again.

Note however that the 450D’s market are first–time digital SLR buyers primarily, not upgraders. If you have a 400D, Canon would rather have you buying a 40D or a bagful of lenses. =)

And yes, any new camera cannot make your current camera less better when you got it. It can still do things the way it was designed to.
